Utgrunden

Client: GE Wind Energy

Place: Sweden

From October 2004 to February 2005 six submarine cables between seven offshore wind turbines were exchanged and embedded into the seabed at a wind farm in the Kalmar Sound.

In order to avoid a long time without the production of power, the work was split into several stages. The existing cable between two wind turbines was first recovered and offloaded at the quay in Bergkvara harbour. The trench for the new cable was excavated and the new cable was then laid out and installed between the wind turbines before a new cable was replaced. In this way each cable between the wind turbines was exchanged, and the stopping of all the wind turbines was avoided, which resulted in only a few days without production from the wind turbines. By carrying out the work in stages the loss for the client were minimized.

The following vessels were used at
Utgrunden Wind Turbine Farm:

M/S Cable One:
1. Recovering of the existing cables.
2. Laying of the new cables.

M/B Silja:
1. Survey of the main cable and video documentation.
2. Transport of cable jointers, personnel and equipment
between the wind turbines.

Stf. Helle Saj:
1. Excavating of the trenches for the new cables.
2. Covering of the new cables.

M/S Honte:
1. Control of trenches and embedding of the cables.
2. Installation of the J-tubes to the wind turbines.

T/B Lille Bjørn:
1. Assistance for C/S Cable One during the laying of the cables.
2. Assistance for M/S Honte during the embedding of the cables.

Approx. 2,300 metres of existing cables were recovered, approx. 2,300 metres of trenches were excavated into the seabed and approx. 2,300 metres of new cables were laid out at a depth of minimum 1 meter below normal seabed level.

The work lasted longer than expected due to bad weather and high swells, which complicated the excavating and covering of cables, though the work was carried out to the agreed price.
