Connecting East and West Denmark for the first time ever:

For over 100 years there have been plans to connect the two sides of Denmark across the Great Belt with a joint electricity supply. This will soon become a reality.

From 2010, the two Danish electricity networks – the Jutland-Funen and Zealand- will be bound together by a new strong power cable under the Great Belt with a transport capacity of 600 MW, which will ensure a more robust electricity supply in Denmark, as East and West Denmark will be able to draw on each other's reserves. Among other things the power will flow from the Jutland wind turbines under the Great Belt to Zealand, which today is connected to the Swedish electricity network. In July 2009, JD-Contractor A/S laid out 96 km submarine cables cross the Great Belt from their cable-laying barge C/B Henry P. Lading.

· 32 km 400 kV (HVDC cable)
· 32 km MRS (return cable)
· 32 km 10-ton SA (fibre optic cable)

It is Energinet.dk who owns and operates the main electricity and natural gas supply in Denmark, and therefore they will also operate the new service, which should start operating by the end of 2010.
